What is Globe Control Valve

A globe control valve is a type of control valve that is designed to regulate or control the flow of fluid through a pipeline. It consists of a movable disk or plug, which is positioned in the flow path and can be moved by an actuator to regulate the flow of fluid. The valve body typically has a spherical shape, hence the name "globe valve."

The globe valve can be used to control the flow rate, pressure, and temperature of a fluid. It is commonly used in applications such as process control, oil and gas refining, power generation, and water treatment. The valve can be operated manually, electrically, or pneumatically, depending on the application requirements.

Globe valves are known for their precise flow control and low-pressure drop, making them an ideal choice for applications that require high accuracy and performance. They can also be used in harsh environments and can withstand high temperatures and pressures.

Advantages of globe valves

Globe valves are used for throttling control. Globe valves should be selected when the desired result is to reduce the pressure of the medium in the piping system. The flow pattern through a globe valve involves a change in direction, resulting in greater flow restriction and a larger pressure drop as the medium passes inside the valve.

Shut-off is achieved by moving the valve flap against the fluid rather than across it. This reduces wear on the closing member. As the valve flap moves toward complete closure, the pressure of the fluid is limited to the pressure required by the piping system. Unlike many other valve designs, globe valves are designed to operate under the extreme conditions that result when fluid flow is restricted.

How do globe valves work?

A tap is the perfect example to show how a globe valve works. Opening the tap means raising or lowering the valve stem, depending on the design. Water then flows out of the tap. When turned the other way, e.g. closed, the raised stem is lowered or the lowered stem is raised.

The number of rotations affects the amount of water that flows from the tap. Similarly, by controlling the wheel of a valve, a certain amount of gas or liquid will pass through the valve. A globe valve fully open means that the flow rate is maximised. On the other hand, a globe valve that is completely closed means that the valve is sealed.
