Carbon steel is an amalgam of iron and mercury in which carbon is the primary alloying component. Typically, no additional alloying components are added to control the material's properties. Carbon steel is most commonly used in sand casting techniques to manufacture the frame and rotor of butterfly valves.
Carbon steel is available in a variety of grades. Casting class LCC (low carbon content) and ASTM A216 WCB (weldable casting class B) steels are most commonly used for valve frames and flappers. wCB materials are best suited for high heat resistance, while LCC materials can be used at low (subzero) temperatures.
Cast carbon steel (ASTM A216, grade WCB) is commonly used for larger valves ranging in size from 1-1/2 to 24 inches. It consists of 30% carbon, 1% manganese, 0.05% phosphorus, 0.06% sulfur, and 0.06% silicon. It has the following material properties:
